There’s no escaping the question, “What is your sign?” With Astrology becoming more and more mainstream, you probably hear this question a lot. Most of us are familiar with the zodiac sign that corresponds with when we were born but that sign is not the full picture. If you are wondering what is the difference between your sign and your big 3 in astrology then keep reading.
What is your sign?
The common “sign” that people are aware of is actually called your Sun sign. It is the main zodiac sign everyone knows. The place that the Sun was in when you were born is derived from which zodiac season you were born. The seasons are separated into 12 equal portions, as per the 12 zodiac signs. However the seasons do not neatly coincide with the 12 months of our Gregorian calendar. For example, while Capricorn is the sign that starts off January, it only rules part of the month. The second half of January would be considered Aquarius season.
Most of the time, you can refer to a general list of dates for each season and find your Sun sign this way. Yet, for individuals born on the first or last day of a zodiac season, knowing your birth time could make all the difference. For example, this is exactly what happened to American singer, Lana Del Rey. In interviews, she spoke about how she was under the belief that she was born a Gemini Sun. Upon closer inspection with a birth time, she found out the Sun was actually in the sign of Cancer at her birth. It matters what day you were born but, to get properly tuned into your sign, it matters what time you were born, too!
The big 3 signs
How do you respond when someone asks, “What are your big three?” This question requires a little bit of investigation. You will need your birth time–see this article here on How to find out what time you were born. The big 3 signs refer to your Sun, Rising, and Moon signs. The Sun, as explained prior, can sometimes be identified by just knowing your day of birth. Although, with the birth time, you are able to see both your Rising sign (also known as Ascendant) and your Moon sign. The rising sign changes every couple of hours and the moon changes every couple of days.
The big three provide a peek into different areas of your personality. Your Sun shows your ego, purpose, drive, masculine energy, and the lens through which you see yourself. Your Rising sign represents how you show yourself to the world. It can include your physical features, natural behaviors, some elements of your style, and the lens through which you view the world. Lastly, your Moon sign governs your internal, private self and your emotions.
When looking at your birth chart for your big 3 placements, they may be entirely different signs. However, the Sun and/or Moon sign are, at times, the same sign as your rising sign. It is less common to have all three placements of your big 3 in the same sign but this may also be the occurrence.
